New Year, New Decade!

Resolutions to keep!

Well, a very happy, healthy, peaceful & successful New Year to you all!

Usually when we start a new year and particularly a new decade we traditionally make new year's resolutions.  Now answer honestly, how many of you have kept to the ones you set yourself on January 1st last year??  Honestly now....??

Anyway, perhaps it's the way we make our resolutions that makes them unsustainable.  Maybe we could look at them in a different way and word them differently for ourselves which would make them easier to stick to, for instance.....

LAST YEAR - lose a stone.  THIS YEAR - find a new activity I love!  If you didn't manage to lose the weight last year then making the same goal again this year sets yourself up for the same results.  For instance do you enjoy running or would like to try running?  Do you enjoy aerobic classes or would like to try them?  Do you enjoy the goal setting required with Taekwondo?  There are many ways to enjoy yourself and as a by product lose weight - book an appointment with PAUL on 07989 139534 to help you goal set your way to weight loss success!

LAST YEAR - give up smoking.  THIS YEAR - get the support I need in order to stop smoking.  According to Mind, you're more likely to stick to any resolution if you plan it carefully beforehand, including smoking.  Set your quit date with a friend and log onto www.nhs.uk/smokefree.  You can sign up for the free Together Programme and choose to be supported via regular mails packs, texts, emails or phone calls.  If you prefer to attend a local group, there are 150 NHS Stop Smoking services in leisure centres, doctors' surgeries and high street-chemists or you can call the helpline on 0800 022 4332.

LAST YEAR - go on a diet.  THIS YEAR - change a few things with my eating habits.  This particular field justifies a whole article but we will stick to some basics.  Diet is a negative word and makes us feel like "failures" when we "cheat" so we really need to change our mindset about food instead.  We mustn't mistake hunger for thirst so have a glass of water and see if that satifies your "pangs" before instantly eating.  Then ask yourself firstly....am I eating when I am hungry or eating out of habit??  Secondly, what am I actually eating and is it what I would really like to eat??  Thirdly, am I eating with awareness or just eating quickly to clear my plate??  Fourthly, am I still eating even when I am full??  If you would like further information regarding your food habits, keep a food diary (be honest!!) and contact PAUL on 07989 139534 for further advice.

LAST YEAR - be healthier.  THIS YEAR - make one small lifestyle change.  If it's not specific, it's not do-able.  A vague statement such as "be healthier" doesn't mean anything so if hard to live up to.  Something like, "Run for 20 minutes on Monday & Thursdays" is clear-cut and achievable.  Or how about, "Take a healthy packed lunch to work".  Small changes add up to big results

Be specific with whatever it is you want to achieve and you have a much better chance of success, this can be applied with weight-loss, eating habits, health, giving up smoking, organising finances etc.
